Communication Throughout the Job

Before work begins, you can request information about technician qualifications, the proposed scope of work, and the records available for your insurance claim. Clear expectations help you make informed decisions about your property.

Why we don’t use subcontractors

The question “are your techs employees or subs” sounds like a technicality. It’s not. It changes who shows up, how they’re trained, and who’s accountable when something goes wrong.

W-2 employees vs. subs — what’s different

  • Training is standardized. Our four technicians train on the same equipment, the same documentation protocol, and the same IICRC S500/S520 standards. A sub brings their own habits.
  • Chain of accountability. If a sub damages something or cuts a corner, you’re caught between two companies. With employees, True Day is on the hook, full stop.
  • Consistent documentation. Same photo workflow, same moisture-reading log, same close-out package on every job. Insurance claims move faster when the paperwork is predictable.
  • No markup games. A sub-model company bills you for the sub + their markup. An employee-model company bills you for actual labor.

Why we run on W-2 technicians, not subcontractors

Most mid-sized restoration companies supplement their crew with subcontracted labor, especially during peak call periods. True Day’s four technicians are all W-2 employees — Marcus Rivera, Sofia Mendoza, Daniel, Alex — and here is why that choice matters for the homeowner:

W-2 model (what we run)

  • Payroll taxes, workers’ comp, and liability on us
  • Technician trained to our documentation standards
  • Same crew returns across days of the same job
  • Certification renewals paid by the company
  • Internal quality-control chain
  • Loss history and performance tracked per technician

Subcontractor model (industry norm)

  • Lower overhead, higher margin per job
  • Crew composition varies day to day
  • Documentation standards vary by sub
  • Insurance coverage depends on each sub’s policy
  • Dispute resolution harder — multiple parties
  • Quality consistency depends on which sub lands the job

The W-2 model is why we cap crew size at four and grow slowly. Adding people fast via subs is cheaper short-term — and it is the single most common reason a restoration company’s quality drifts. We’d rather be smaller than looser.
